aeiou sometimes y by EBN OZN. The oddly named new wave duo EBN-OZN had one novelty hit, "AEIOU Sometimes Y" in 1983, and then lapsed into obscurity. Featuring Ned "EBN" Liben (synthesizer) and Robert "OZN" Rosen (organ, vocals), EBN-OZN was actually an eclectic act that saw no stylistic boundaries, venturing into synth pop, funk, and salsa with giddy enthusiasm. EBN-OZN was formed in New York in the early '80s. Rosen was introduced to Liben by an acquaintance of his girlfriend. Liben and Rosen were actually raised only a few blocks from one another, but they never met. Fans of punk rock and hip-hop, the two began spending time in clubs with one another, absorbing various forms of dance music from New York, Puerto Rico, and Europe. In 1984, EBN-OZN released their only LP, Feeling Cavalier, on Elektra Records. The single "AEIOU Sometimes Y" became a staple on modern rock stations. However, Liben and Rosen were never heard from again after that, at least not together. Liben started working with Scritti Politti while Rosen created the house music outfit DaDa NaDa for his own label One Voice Records. Rosen eventually left the rock business, worked as a script analyst for Oscar-winning director Oliver Stone, and began writing screenplays. Liben passed away from a heart attack in 1998.

As per request, here is EBN-OZN's video to their song "Bag Lady". They are best known for "AEIOU - Sometimes Y". This video also features Imogene Coca, a very popular actress and comedian of the 1950s, especially on Sid Ceaser's "Your Show of Shows". Probably better remembered by younger viewers as Aunt Edna in National Lampoon's Vacation. I worked with her on a tour a revival of the musical "Whoopie!". A very sweet, and funny lady.

Van Johnson and Stephen Rabow entertain Seattle on a "chomp-down-swallow kinda" Friday. Here's the legendary Rock of the 80s, KYYX FM on August 26, 1983. Even during the "peak" of the so-called New Wave in the US, only a handful of big city commercial stations played music like this in the late morning and afternoon: The Waitresses, EBN-OZN, Tim Scott, Europeans, Minor Detail, and The Pretenders' "Tattooed Love Boys." Some of the radio spots on this recording are hilarious, including the New Wave-style ad for Dairy Farmers of Washington and the live spot for The Backstage Tavern in Ballard. Like the man says: "Oodles of poodle strudel."

OXOgraphy collective artist hamza bin al-wathan presents a dada-ist vowel poem. october, 2008. video editing by Brandy Glovka. Artist Statement: this poem is a continuance of the development of the dada-ist randomization of word, sound and vowel sequence as espoused by tristan tzara, hans arp and (in particular) richard huelsenbeck. whereas huelsenbeck used vowels linked together in short vowel 'word-sounds', i have disjointed those sequences and presented each vowel as a stand-alone. while the inspiration is clearly dada, i have infused it with my own mark as an artist. the poem is as much about 'distribution' ie. the occurance of each vowel (such as 'a') and the linear distance between their re-occurance. i love humor and symbolism and multiple layers of meaning, and in this piece the addition of 'y' is intended to be humorous, to evoke a chuckle at each occurance since the title of the piece hints that it is elusive and 'y' is really the star of the show. to reinforce meaning i have taken a slight departure from pure dada practise, rather than randomize the vowel sequence, i used a literal sequence of vowels as found in the most popular english translation (by abdullah yusuf ali) of an important islamic text passage, that of the surah (1) one al-fatiha of the holy quran. in english al-fatiha can be read as 'the opening' and it is with this spirit in mind that this vowel poem is my first contribution to the OXOgraphy Collective.
