With so many alternative post punkers turning to the R&B scene to pilfer sonics and style, one spin of Early in the Morning" is proof that the traffic did not run one way only. Building on an insistent beat before wrapping an infectious melody around vocals that are simultaneously simmeringly slow and street-smart rough, the Gap Band managed to eclipse nearly everything they had accomplished in the past. The song shot to the top of the R&B charts in spring 1982 and also gave them their highest ever Pop position when "Early in the Morning" cruised into the Top 30 not long after.
