Buffy Sainte Marie - "Universal Soldier"

Hes 5 foot 2 and hes 6 feet 4 And he fights with missiles and with spears Hes all of 31 and hes only 17. And hes been a soldier for a thousand years Hes a catholic, a Hindu, an atheist, a Jane A buddist, a Baptist and Jew. And he knows he shouldnt ve killed And he knows he always will kill Youll for me my freidn and me for you Hes fighting for Canada. Hes fighting for France. Hes fighting for the USA. And hes fighting for the Russians. And hes fighting for Japan And he thinks well brought an end to war this way. Hes fighting for democracy, hes fighting for the reds He says its for the peace of all. Hes the one, who must decide, whos to live and whos to die. And he never sees the writing on the walls. But without him, how would Hitler have condemned him at Dachau? Without him Caesar would have stood alone Hes the one who gives is body as a weapon to the war. And without him all this killing cant go on Hes the universal soldier And he really is the blame But his orders comes from far away no more. They come from him. And you and me. Oh, brothers cant you see. This is not the way we put an end to war

"God Is Alive, Magic Is Afoot" Song: Buffy Sainte-Marie Video by gewajega@yahoo.com Lyrics by Leonard Cohen: " God is alive; Magic is afoot God is alive; Magic is afoot God is afoot; Magic is alive Alive is afoot..... Magic never died. God never sickened; many poor men lied many sick men lied Magic never weakened Magic never hid Magic always ruled God is afoot God never died. God was ruler though his funeral lengthened Though his mourners thickened Magic never fled Though his shrouds were hoisted the naked God did live Though his words were twisted the naked Magic thrived Though his death was published round and round the world the heart did not believe Many hurt men wondered many struck men bled Magic never faltered Magic always led. Many stones were rolled but God would not lie down Many wild men lied many fat men listened Though they offered stones Magic still was fed Though they locked their coffers God was always served. 2.. Magic is afoot. God rules. Alive is afoot. Alive is in command. Many weak men hungered Many strong men thrived Though they boasted solitude God was at their side Nor the dreamer in his cell nor the captain on the hill Magic is alive Though his death was pardoned round and round the world the heart did not believe. Though laws were carved in marble they could not shelter men Though altars built in parliaments they could not order men Police arrested Magic and Magic went with them, for Magic loves the hungry. This protest song was written in the early sixties by Buffy Sainte-Marie. It's about individual responsibility for war. We wanted to sing this song because, unfortunately, what Buffy sang about at her time is still is so true today and will probably be so for years to come. We changed the lyrics a bit to make it more relevant to today's society. Enjoy. :) Our debut album "The Big Black & The Blue" is out now!! Buffy Sainte-Marie TAKE MY HAND FOR A WHILE

This song was written by Buffy for her 1968 album "I'm Gonna Be a Country Girl Again". It was also included on her 1997 CD "The Best of Buffy Sainte-Marie Volume 2". Lovely melody and wonderful lyrics..... Take My Hand For a While (LYRICS) Take my hand for a while, explain it to me once again, just for the sake of my broken heart. Look into my eyes and maybe I will understand how love I counted on was never there. You see, I thought that you might love me. So you caught me, it seems, off balance with a heart that's full, of love and pretty dreams that two should share. And so, I know, but please before you go..... Take my hand for a while, explain it to me once again, Just for the sake of my broken heart.

Buffy Sainte-Marie Tribute

Here are two short songs (Mary / Isketayo Sewow [Cree Call]) of the famous Native American singer Buffy Sainte-Marie. Buffy Sainte-Marie (born in 1941) is an Academy Award-winning Canadian musician, composer and visual artist. She was born on the Piapot Cree reserve in the Saskatchewan. By 1962 Buffy began to tour alone, performing in various concert halls, folk festivals and Native reservations across the US, Canada and abroad. She spent a considerable amount of time in the coffeehouses of downtown Toronto's old Yorkville district, and New York City's Greenwich Village as part of the early to mid-1960's folk scene, alongside other emerging Canadian contemporaries Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell and Neil Young. She quickly earned a reputation as a gifted songwriter, and many of her earliest songs, such as "Until It's Time For You To Go", were turned into hits by other artists including Barbra Streisand, Elvis Presley, Sonny and Cher, Chet Atkins, Roberta Flack, Janis Joplin, Neil Diamond, Ed Ames, Shirley Bassey, Vikki Carr, Carmen MacRae, Andy Williams, among others. Her debut album, "It's My Way", was released on Vanguard Records in 1964 and she was subsequently named Billboard Magazine's Best New Artist. This album also contained the critically acclaimed song "Universal Soldier" that later became a hit for Donovan. She married musician Jack Nitzsche in 1969, and regularly appeared on the children's TV series "Sesame Street" over a five year period from 1976 - 1981. The ...

BUFFY SAINTE-MARIE - He's A Keeper Of The Fire [1969]

HE'S THE PROPHET OF THE NEW DAY, BABY! HE'S A KEEPER OF THE FIRE! "He's A Keeper Of The Fire" written by Buffy Sainte-Marie. "lluminations", released in 1969, was the sixth album by Buffy Sainte-Marie. Though most of the tracks did away with the backing she had used on her previous two albums, Illuminations had a completely different sound from anything she had previously done. From a basis of vocals and acoustic guitar, Sainte-Marie and producer Maynard Solomon used electronic synthesisers to create a sound that was much more experimental music than folk. Indeed, Illuminations was the first quadrophonic vocal album ever made, and on songs like the album's only single "Better to Find Out Yourself", her voice is completely altered by a Buchla synthesiser. Peter Schickele, however, did provide arrangements to "Mary", "Adam" and "The Angel", whilst the four tracks "Suffer the Little Children", "With You, Honey", "Guess Who I Saw in Paris" and "He's A Keeper of the Fire" were her first work to be not produced by Vanguard boss Maynard Solomon. Instead, they had a stripped-down rock sound and were produced by little known folk-jazz songwriter Mark Roth. On its initial release, "Illuminations" was a disaster commercially, failing to get anywhere near the Billboard Top 200 and being deleted and largely disowned by Sainte-Marie within a few years. However, in more recent times Illuminations has acquired a fan base quite distinct from that associated with any of Sainte-Marie's ...

Buffy Sainte-Marie - "No No Keshagesh"

Buffy Sainte-Marie's "No No Keshagesh" Lyrics: I never saw so many business suits. Never knew a dollar sign that looked so cute. Never knew a junkie with a money Jones: He's singing, "Who's selling Park Place. Who's buying Boardwalk"? These old men they make their dirty deals. Go in the back room and see what they can steal. Talk about your beautiful and spacious skies. It's about uranium; it's about the water rights. Put Mother Nature on a luncheon plate. They cut her up and call it real estate. Want all the resources and all of the land. They make a war over it: Blow things up for it. The reservation now is poverty row. There's something cooking and the lights are low. Somebody's trying to save our mother earth. I'm gonna help them to save it, To sing it and bring it Singing: No no Keshagesh: You can't do that no more, (no more, no more no more) No, no, no, no Keshagesh You can't do that no more, (no more, no more no more) No, no, no, no Keshagesh You can't do that no more, (no more, no more no more) No, no, no, no Keshagesh You can't do that no more, (no more, no more no more) Ole Columbus he was looking good, When he got lost in our neighborhood. Garden of Eden right before his eyes. Now it's all spy ware: now it's all income tax. Ole' brother Midas looking hungry today. What he can't buy he'll get some other way. Buffy Sainte-Marie: A Multimedia Life Joan Prowse, Canada, 2007, 58 minutes Monday, May 10 2010 | 7:00pm | Pacific Cinémathèque doxafestival.ca You have to stand up and break through, says Robbie Robertson of his friend and fellow musician Buffy Sainte-Marie. That is precisely what Buffy Sainte-Marie has done, forging her own unique path as a singer-songwriter, activist, artist and teacher. Born in rural Saskatchewan, and adopted by an American family, Buffy grew up in time of radical change. The singer-songwriter movement that came out the critical mass established in New York City by the group of musicians that included Phil Ochs, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, and Joni Mitchell, helped to launch Buffys career. Even as protest songs like Universal Soldier cemented her reputation as a gifted songwriter, Buffy was not a woman easily pigeon-holed. Her career has also included appearances on Sesame Street, immersion in the Native rights movement in the US, being a United Nations spokesperson, as well as mother to her son Cody. Throughout her integrity has remained absolute: They only have to hold you underwater for four minutes and youre dead for a long time, says Buffy. She went her own way, moving to Hawaii, raising goats, discovering digital art, as well as being one of the first musicians in the world to record songs and mix tracks using the internet. Universal Soldier By BUFFY SAINT-MARIE (Cover)

Universal Soldier By BUFFY SAINT-MARIE (Cover) I'm more familiar with the Donovan version. "Universal Soldier" is a song written and recorded by Canadian singer-songwriter Buffy Sainte-Marie. The song was originally released on Sainte-Marie's debut album It's My Way! in 1964. "Universal Soldier" was not a popular hit at the time of its release, but it did garner attention within the contemporary folk music community. Sainte-Marie said of the song: "I wrote 'Universal Soldier' in the basement of The Purple Onion coffee house in Toronto in the early sixties. It's about individual responsibility for war and how the old feudal thinking kills us all". By 1965 the song had caught the attention of budding folk singer Donovan, who recorded it utilizing a similar arrangement to Buffy Sainte-Marie's original recording. Donovan's recording was released on an EP titled The Universal Soldier in the United Kingdom (15th August 1965, Pye NEP 24219). The EP continued Donovan's run of high charting releases in the UK by reaching #5 on the charts. Tracks on the EP: "Universal Soldier"; "The Ballad of a Crystal Man" b/w "Do You Hear Me Now" (Bert Jansch); "The War Drags On" (Mick Softley) The lack of interest in the EP format within the United States led Hickory Records to release the song as a single in September 1965 (Hickory 45-1338). Donovan's cover of "Universal Soldier" was backed with another track from the British EP, Bert Jansch's "Do You Hear Me Now?". Donovan's USA single release ...
