The US Air Force's first unmanned re-entry spacecraft landed at Vandenberg Air Force Base at 1:16 am PST today, Dec. 3. The X-37B, named Orbital Test Vehicle 1 (OTV-1), conducted on-orbit experiments for more than 220 days during its maiden voyage. It fired its orbital maneuver engine in low-earth orbit to perform an autonomous reentry before landing. The X-37B is the newest and most advanced re-entry spacecraft. Managed by the Air Force Rapid Capabilities Office (AFRCO), the X-37B program performs risk reduction, experimentation and concept of operations development for reusable space vehicle technologies. "Today's landing culminates a successful mission based on close teamwork between the 30th Space Wing, Boeing and the Air Force Rapid Capabilities Office," said Lt Col Troy Giese, X-37B program manager from the AFRCO. "We are very pleased that the program completed all the on-orbit objectives for the first mission." OTV-1's de-orbit and landing mark the transition from the on-orbit demonstration phase to a refurbishment phase for the program. The Air Force is preparing to launch the next X-37B, OTV-2, in Spring 2011 aboard an Atlas V booster.

NASA's newest Earth-observing satellite soared into space early today aboard a Delta II rocket after liftoff at 5:48 am EDT from Space Launch Complex 2 at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. NASA's National Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System Preparatory Project, or NPP, successfully separated from the Delta II 58 minutes after launch, and the first signal was acquired by the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System. NPP's solar array deployed 67 minutes after launch to provide the satellite with electrical power. NPP is on course to reach its sun-synchronous polar orbit 512 miles (824 km) above Earth. "NPP is critical to our understanding of Earth's processes and changes," said NASA Deputy Administrator Lori Garver. "Its impact will be global and builds on 40 years of work to understand our complex planet from space. This 13-year project to create a new artificial reef in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary finally ended May 27, 2009, with the intentional sinking of the former missile-tracking ship the Gen. Hoyt S. Vandenberg. The 523-foot-long ship is situated about seven miles south of Key West. The bottom of the ships hull rests on sand at depths between 140 and 150 feet. But the ship is so massive that the superstructure extends to about 45 feet below the surface. Even though the process to acquire, fund, permit, rid the Vandenberg of potential environmental contaminants and tow her to Key West took 13 years, only a minute and fifty four seconds were needed to sink her after a demolition team ignited forty four explosives cutting charges.

A 13-year project to create a new artificial reef in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary finally ended May 27, 2009, with the intentional sinking of the former missile-tracking ship the Gen. Hoyt S. Vandenberg. The ship is resting on the bottom of the ocean, in 140 feet of water, about seven miles off of Key West. It only took one minute and 54 seconds for the ship to sink.

The Vandenberg arrived in Key West on April 22nd 2009. Keys Websites provided exclusive live coverage and web broadcast. Scheduled for scuttling in May as a dive and snorkeling attraction, the Vandenberg is already generating international buzz.

The USNS Vandenberg was sunk 6 miles off the coast of Key West to create a natural reef on 27 May, 2009. This underwater footage was taken approximately 3 hrs after she arrived on the ocean floor. Mel Fisher's Treasures assisted in the project and provided vessels used as the dive platforms for saftey and tech divers. The Vandenberg footage was captured by Gary Randolph, VP/ Director of Operations for Mel Fisher's Treasures.
